Bringing our Vision into Reality
Our founding group has been drawn to create a community on rural land with space for food production, on the sacred lands of the Hokianga o Te Ika-a-Maui, with learning facilities, medical facilities, shops and services nearby in Kaikohekohe.
We will be bringing this vision into reality when we can secure a large amount of leased farmland with utilities and infrastructure and establish contract for resources with local iwi tribemen. Although the land is not permanent, the vision is being created with the foresight to move to a more permanent location for the purposes of building larger communities and sovereign nations.
Our vision is still forming and responding sensitively to the many changes around us. We delight in watching it grow and be shaped by the diverse people who are attracted to this vision and are choosing to join us in this community.

KAITIAKI ECO VILLAGE
The KAITIAKI Eco Village consists of; a main traditional carved Maori Meeting House called a ‘Marae’; dining and learning facilities; two or more eco-homes that are seen to have open fires, walk ways and communal areas; indoor and outdoor workshop areas, ablution and laundry block, livestock, organic gardens and a carved main entrance.
KAITIAKI Eco Village is a family place where each individual learns an important part of their scope of work. Children learn about some of the restrictions and boundaries that exist for them. Much of the learning takes place through involvement and participation either at work or sitting around the fire.
KAITIAKI Eco Village is a very important part of a child’s learning. She or he first learns about processes and the roles of males and females from the home. The parents, guardians, grandparents, siblings, elders and anyone else who may be living in the village, can be regarded as the child’s first teachers and strongly influence the way the child is.
The vitality of the KAITIAKI Eco Village comes down to establishing cultural assets with a point of difference, that are unique, reflect the community and complement rather than replicate the rest of Te Ika-a-Maui's cultural and natural resources. The KAITIAKI Eco- Village is being built with cultural identity and creative industries to attract, retain, validate, and acknowledge the role of artists and indigenous cultural groups in our community, as well as to generate new wealth and prosperity for KAITIAKI.
ECO HOMES
The Eco Homes are small houses in a cluster created from local earth. The Eco-homes are designed with sacred geometry in mind (tree of life), natural raw materials, the sun, shade and wind for passive cooling and heating and made from natural materials of the earth. Solar energy and radiant heating may be incorporated.
Eco Homes are ergonomically round and translucent, blending with the countryside. The geometric shapes have certain properties and in a circle the energy freely moves and revolves. MEETING HOUSE ‘MARAE’
The traditional marae complex is the central meeting place for the community in every way. Meeting House ‘Marae’, a large carved purpose build, one roomed house with a large fire place is used for hosted gatherings and verbally transmitting heritage and knowledge. A plan to build in the Hokianga, Te Ika-a-Maui, Aotearoa and Sydney, Australia is on the table.
This Marae, is the only Meeting House of its kind in Australia. It is so unique to this country that it is the first flag ship cultural environment of its kind in this country, drawing people from across the region, as well as nationally and internationally. This Marae, namely ‘Te Kotahitangi Marae Poihakena’ means Unity, Togetherness and Solidarity in Sydney Australia. This Marae is a compliment to the settlement of Maori in Rangihou Parramatta in 1814. But most of all it will bring life to the KAITIAKI Eco Village and make KAITIAKI the most unique place to go for a cultural experience like no other.

Kaitiaki will continue to plant flowers, wood trees, seed-bearing fruit trees and seed-bearing organic gardens, vegetables, natural and hydroponic and observe seasonal changes in a variety of ways as they experience the wonder of nature.
Mother Earth gives all life a home to evolve on. Know that your home is also the home of countless other species that depend upon it for shelter, food and a place to live. Space on Earth is designated for all species to share equally and co-exist, for all are here to evolve their souls and all are here to enjoy their lifespans. As this is especially true for humans, all other species have come to help and bolster the life of humans by giving them oxygen, food and clothing. All you have, is being given to you as gifts from other species. The trees give you oxygen, the animals give you clothing, and the crops give you food. All of these are live, conscious beings, here in service to Earth and to all life forms. Trees, animals, crops, plants, Cetaceans and all ocean life, all need their habitats kept intact in order for them to survive and evolve, just as humans need their homes to live in to carry on their lives.

- The Community will build and manage community facilities, including the common land on which most food will be produced;

- The Community will have the power to control building standards and private land management for the good of the whole.

- The community has its own water sources, will collect roof water, and aims to use water efficiently and to re-use grey water;
- The community will adopt permaculture and organic land management principles.
- We aim to minimise use of motor vehicles;
- Vehicle movements within the community will be restricted;
- Car parking will be clustered to minimise the visual impact and will be grassed where possible;
- We will support a community vehicle-share system and a courtesy van;
- The community aims to develop businesses and generate employment for residents as far as possible, but household finances will be the responsibility of individuals and families;
- The community aims to develop businesses based on, but not limited to, arts and crafts, education, healing and therapy, and food production;
- The community will grow as much of its food as possible, particularly fruit, nuts and vegetables using organic and permaculture principles;
- The community aims to develop an internal trading system to enable members to trade time, skills and goods;
- We will establish a food co-op and possibly a bulk food store;
- Most possessions will be individually owned but many will be shared including garden and workshop machines and machinery, bicycles and tools;
- We aim to provide shared transport – car sharing and/or minibus or other.
- The community will have shared costs to cover and can be compensated by exchange of sweat equity and time exchange.
- We aim to create a place of beauty with attractive buildings surrounded by gardens;

- We will develop other leisure facilities for both children and adults to complement existing facilities in the locality;
- We aim to provide shared office, storage, workshop, studio and laundry spaces;
- The community will provide sleeping facilities in the Meeting House ‘Marae’ for overnight stays;
- We will provide an ablution block for visitors and residents;
- We will explore establishment of child-care and True Potential Learning facilities.

- The eventual permanent population of the village will be a maximum of about 90 people, however, we expect to expand into more villages as our population grows;

- We recognise that living in a community can heighten the intensity of interactions that occur between people. The land offers warmth, security, nourishment and sustenance, a feeling of belonging. KAITIAKI see ourselves as custodians, guardians of their ancestral home and community area. The obligation is to care for the land and to pass it on, as intact as possible.
Respect for and appreciation of the natural environment should be encouraged and fostered. Conservation is an important aspect in regards to study. When one changes the face of the landscape, he can never return it to its former state therefore Kaitaiki emphasizes the need to live as closely as possible with nature, to learn about it, to understand it.
There are so many wonderful ways that children can get involved with the feeling of mother earth. Kaitiaki will continue to plant flowers, wood trees, seed-bearing fruit trees and seed-bearing organic gardens, vegetables, natural and hydroponic and observe seasonal changes in a variety of ways as they experience the wonder of nature.
Mother Earth gives all life a home to evolve on. Know that your home is also the home of countless other species that depend upon it for shelter, food and a place to live. Space on Earth is designated for all species to share equally and co-exist, for all are here to evolve their souls and all are here to enjoy their lifespans. As this is especially true for humans, all other species have come to help and bolster the life of humans by giving them oxygen, food and clothing. All you have, is being given to you as gifts from other species. The trees give you oxygen, the animals give you clothing, and the crops give you food. All of these are live, conscious beings, here in service to Earth and to all life forms. Trees, animals, crops, plants, Cetaceans and all ocean life, all need their habitats kept intact in order for them to survive and evolve, just as humans need their homes to live in to carry on their lives.
